As Bruce Springsteen’s European tour approaches, kicking off in Cardiff, Wales, on May 5, will the Virgin Mary be along for the ride? The Boss has in fact never hidden his attachment to the mother of Jesus.
The Boss will soon be back in Europe! In a few days Bruce Springsteen will perform in several European cities. After a first date in Cardiff, Wales, he will give a concert at the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille on May 25. Stages in Ireland, England, Italy, Spain and Belgium will follow. His tour is due to end on July 25 in London. If his many fans do not hide their joy at finding him on stage, a very special guest could also be part of the tour: the Virgin Mary .
The musical creation of this American rock legend is visibly influenced by his quest for the spiritual and by the Bible . The “Boss” was raised as a child as a devout Catholic. “My family lived a stone’s throw from the Catholic church and the convent and school of the Sainte-Rose de Lima nuns. I truly grew up surrounded by God,” he once confided to his audience during a concert. Although no longer practicing, Bruce Springsteen also claimed in his memoir, Born to Run , published in 2016, that the Catholic faith never left him. “Once Catholic, you are always Catholic,” he assured. Before specifying further: “I don’t participate in my religion but I know somewhere… deep down… I’m still on the team.”
A song dedicated to Mary
With the album Devils & Dust, and in particular his song “Jesus Was an Only” , published in 2005, Bruce Springsteen seemed to have found authentic religious inspiration. This song written from Marie’s point of view tells the story of a mother losing her child. Bruce Springsteen speaks well of Mary, mother of Jesus , the one who walks alongside her son “on the path where his blood was shed.” At the end of a live performance of “Jesus Was an Only Son,” Springsteen explained what led him to write the song: “Our children have their own destiny outside of us and I tried through this song to deepen the idea of Jesus as the son of Mary. Jesus was someone’s boy. I think whatever divinity we believe in is hidden at the heart of our humanity.”
