The “Virgin Velada”, bust of Our Lady, gives the impression that there is a transparent veil over the statue; in fact, this whole masterpiece is a unique piece.
The ” Virgin Velada ” is a Carrara marble sculpture that depicts the bust of the Virgin Mary under a veil . Carved in one piece by the Italian sculptor Giovanni Strazza (1815-1878) in the early 1850s, the masterpiece made in Rome was transported to the then colony of Newfoundland in Canada in 1856, as recorded on 4 December of that year by Bishop John Thomas Mullock :
“A beautiful statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in marble, from Strazza was received from Rome safely. The face is veiled and you can see its features and characteristics. It’s a perfect work of art. ”
The “Virgin Veiled” was kept in the episcopal palace near St. John’s Cathedral until 1862, when gift Mullock presented it to Mother Mary Magdalene O’Shaughnessy, superior of the Convent of the Presentation of Mary, under whose care she remains.
