The New Testament never tells us what happened to Mary Magdalene after Easter morning. We last see her running to tell the apostles she had seen the risen Lord. After that, silence. Two competing traditions
The Western tradition, strongest in France, holds that Mary Magdalene sailed to Provence and spent her final years in prayer near Marseille. The relics venerated at Vézelay Abbey and Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume support this account, which gained widespread devotion in medieval Europe.
The Eastern tradition places her in Ephesus with St. John and the Virgin Mary. This tradition holds that Mary Magdalene accompanied the Mother of God to Ephesus, where John cared for Mary after the Crucifixion. Some Eastern sources claim Mary Magdalene died and was buried there, though the lack of early documentation makes this harder to verify than the French tradition.
Neither account appears in Scripture or in writings from the apostolic age. Both emerge from later pious traditions, which means the Church has never definitively settled the question.
Why this matters
The uncertainty around Mary Magdalene’s later life reminds us how much the New Testament doesn’t tell us. The Gospels and Acts focus on Christ’s saving work and the Church’s first generation, not comprehensive biographies. Many saints who knew Jesus personally left no written trace of their final years.
What we do know with certainty is that Mary Magdalene was the first witness to the Resurrection. Christ chose a woman, specifically this woman, to announce the central event of salvation history. That commission matters more than the location of her tomb.

Both Ephesus and southern France offer pilgrimage sites connected to Mary Magdalene. If you visit either, approach the tradition with appropriate reverence but without claiming historical certainty. The Church venerates Mary Magdalene for her witness to the empty tomb, not for any particular ending to her story.
