Gregor Mendel, the 19th-century monk whose experiments with pea plants laid the foundation for modern genetics, was an Augustinian friar. July 20 marks his birth in 1822, and Aleteia’s recent profile highlights a detail many Catholics don’t know: Mendel belonged to the same religious order as Pope Leo XIV, the Augustinians. Born Johann Mendel in Austrian Silesia (now the Czech Republic), he entered monastic life at 21 and took the name Gregor.
What happened in that monastery garden
At St. Thomas Abbey in Brno, Mendel spent eight years cross-breeding garden peas and meticulously recording which traits appeared in which generations. He discovered that traits like flower color and seed shape passed from parent plants to offspring in predictable ratios, not through blending but through discrete units we now call genes. His 1866 paper, “Experiments on Plant Hybridization,” went largely ignored during his lifetime. The scientific community wasn’t ready for it.
Mendel’s work was rediscovered in 1900, sixteen years after his death, when three European botanists independently confirmed his findings. Today he’s called the father of genetics. Every high school biology student learns Mendel’s laws of inheritance.
Why this matters
The Church has a long history of monk-scientists: not men fleeing the world to avoid inquiry, but men whose vows freed them to pursue truth without financial pressure or academic politics. Mendel had the stability of monastic life, access to the abbey’s library and gardens, and a community that valued learning. His abbot encouraged the research. It’s a reminder that faith and science aren’t opposites. They’re both ways of asking what’s true.
Pope Leo XIV’s election in 2025 made the Augustinians more visible to Catholics worldwide, but the order has always punched above its weight in intellectual life. Mendel joins a tradition that includes St. Augustine himself, Martin Luther (before his break with Rome), and countless teachers and scholars across eight centuries.
