Devotion to St. Joseph runs deep in the Church, but Catholics don’t have a universal prayer to him like the Hail Mary. That’s starting to change. Aleteia published a primer on the Hail Joseph prayer, a traditional devotion modeled after the Hail Mary that’s gaining renewed attention among the faithful.

What happened

The Hail Joseph is not a new composition. It’s been prayed in various forms for centuries, though never with the universal adoption of Marian prayers. The structure mirrors the Hail Mary: an opening address, scriptural titles, a petition for intercession. The most common version begins, “Hail, Joseph, son of David, just man and virgin spouse; blessed are you among all men, and blessed is Jesus, the fruit of Mary, your faithful spouse.”

Why this matters

St. Joseph is the patron of the universal Church, proclaimed so by Blessed Pius IX in 1870. Pope Leo XIV has continued the modern papal tradition of emphasizing Josephine devotion, particularly during the Year of St. Joseph declared by Pope Francis in 2020. Yet most Catholics can recite a dozen Marian prayers from memory and struggle to name one prayer to Joseph.

The Hail Joseph fills that gap. It gives the foster-father of Jesus a parallel honor to the Mother of God, not in competition but in complementarity. Joseph protected the Holy Family; the prayer asks him to protect us with the same quiet strength.

For Catholic readers

If you pray the Rosary daily, consider adding the Hail Joseph at the end, or praying it with your family at dinner. St. Joseph is the patron of fathers, workers, and the dying. His intercession is powerful and his silence in Scripture speaks louder than words.
