St. Matthias holds a unique place among the Twelve Apostles: he was chosen not by Christ during his earthly ministry, but by the remaining eleven after the Resurrection. Today’s feast celebrates the man who stepped into Judas’s empty place, reminding us that God’s providence works through both dramatic calls and quiet human decisions.

Who St. Matthias was

Matthias had been a follower of Jesus from the beginning, witnessing John’s baptism and the Lord’s ministry through the Ascension. When Peter stood before the 120 disciples in Jerusalem after Judas’s death, he declared they must choose someone who had been with them the whole time to serve as a witness to the Resurrection. Two men qualified: Joseph called Barsabbas and Matthias.

The apostles prayed, then cast lots. The lot fell to Matthias. In that moment, recorded in Acts 1:15-26, he became the twelfth apostle, completing the symbolic number representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Nothing more about him appears in Scripture after that day.

Tradition holds that Matthias preached in Judea and was martyred there, though the details vary. Some accounts place his death by stoning, others by beheading or crucifixion. The axe he carries in iconography points to one tradition of his martyrdom, though its historical basis remains uncertain.

What he’s known for

Matthias represents the faithful disciple who served without spotlight. Unlike Peter’s bold speeches or John’s mystical writings, Matthias left no epistles, performed no famous miracles in Scripture, founded no visible churches we can name. He simply was there, from baptism to Ascension, and when called, he stepped forward.

The book of the gospels he carries in sacred art points to his role as witness. An apostle’s primary work was testimony: “We have seen the Lord.” Matthias could say those words with the same authority as any of the Eleven. The method of his selection, by lot after prayer, shows the early Church’s conviction that God guides even through seemingly random means when hearts are submitted to his will.

For today

When you feel overlooked or wonder if your faithfulness matters without recognition, remember Matthias. He followed for years before anyone wrote his name in the book of Acts. Try this today: identify one act of service you do that no one notices, then do it again without mentioning it to anyone. Offer it as witness to what you’ve seen of Christ’s goodness.

St. Matthias, pray for all who serve in hidden places.
