Novena of emergency: for those who need a special grace

This is the “novena of emergency” to the Virgin Mary that Mother Teresa prayed in distress

In the face of the various problems she faced frequently and in the midst of an accelerated pace of life, St. Teresa of Calcutta invented a way of invoking the intercession of the Virgin Mary, which she called the “Novena de emergencia” ( Flying Novena ).

Mons. Leo Maasburg, a friend and spiritual director of the Santa, explains in his book “Mother Teresa of Calcutta: A Personal Portrait,” that this was “his quick spiritual weapon.”

The novenas are prayers prayed for nine days and are quite common among the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity. However, this prayer promoted by Mother Teresa consisted of praying ten Memorare in a single day, quickly, with purpose in mind.

The Memorare is a prayer of intercession to the Blessed Virgin, usually attributed to St Bernard of Clairvaux, which Mother Teresa often prayed.

Mons. Maasburg explained that Mother Teresa always prayed ten Memoirs because “she trusted so much in the collaboration of the heavens, that she always added a tenth Memorare immediately, in thanksgiving for the favor received.”

This “Novena of emergency” had one thing in common with the novenas of nine days and even those of nine months: trust for divine help, as the apostles did for nine days along with “Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and the women “(Acts 1: 14) waiting for the help promised by the Holy Spirit.

St. Teresa of Calcutta used this prayer constantly to ask for the healing of a sick child, before important conversations, when passports disappeared, to ask for heavenly help when provisions ended, etc.

Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, postulator of the cause of the canonization of Mother Teresa, pointed out on one occasion that the Saint taught that the Memorare “effectively expresses its confidence in the power of Mary’s intercession as mediator of all graces.”

“It flows from the love and trust I had in Mary; was a simple way to submit your requests. The quick response he received was his inspiration to appeal to the Mother of Heaven more and more confidently through the words of the Memorare, “he added.

The prayer is as follows:

“Remember, O Most Virgin Mary, that it has never been heard that any of those who have recourse to your protection, begging for your help, should be forsaken by you.

I am encouraged, with equal confidence, to you as my Mother, O Virgin among all a singular, and of you I am worth. Groaning under the weight of my sins I prostrate myself at your feet.

Do not reject my supplications, O Mother of the Humanized Son of God, but let yourselves be gracious to hear them, and to obtain what I ask of you. Amen”.
